What:
Educator unions in Beverly, Gloucester, Marblehead, and Revere have all voted by more than 99% to enter into “work-to-rule” starting on Friday, October 4, 2024. Marblehead educators commenced their work-to-rule on Wednesday (October 2), and regional work-to-rule actions in Beverly, Gloucester, and Revere begin Friday (October 4). Entering work-to-rule, educators will cease performing non-customary duties outside contractual responsibilities. The action is a protest to stalled contract negotiations and demonstrates how much educators routinely give beyond what is required of them.
Why:
Educator unions have been in negotiations with their respective School Committees since February. With contracts now being a month or longer expired, educators are moving towards this public action to raise community awareness of the crisis in their public schools. Educators across the North Shore are fighting for smaller class sizes, paid parental leave, longer lunch and recess time for the youngest learners, and a living wage for all staff.
Who:
Teachers and support staff from Gloucester, Beverly, and Revere will participate in a “work-to-rule” kickoff by doing morning standouts and walk-ins. Educators will hold signs, talk to community stakeholders, and demonstrate their solidarity. Marblehead educators (schools closed for the Rosh Hashanah) will continue their work to rule action on Monday.
Media:
Educators can speak with reporters at the times and locations noted above (with additional spokespeople available upon request). Media are allowed to attend and film the event.
